Floorball is one of the more obscure sports in our school. While soccer and basketball both attract plenty of players, floorball certainly shies from that performance. Why is floorball so obscure? I interviewed Mr. Sanderlin.
While I was expecting a glamorous and honorable episode on how he started floorball, Mr. Sanderlin simply saw the game and got interested. He was getting injured too much on the football field and was looking for a safer sport. He ended up in floorball. That isn’t to say that floorball isn’t intense; floorball is an intense game with fewer health hazards. Perhaps the biggest attraction of floorball is that it’s a safe yet intense sport. Certainly, younger kids and older men find it much more enjoyable to play floorball.
When asked what he wanted to do with floorball, Mr. Sanderlin answered that he was helping Mr. Vanio in his effort to bring floorball Turkey. They’ve already had floorball tournaments the past few years and have already had the IGA floorball team join the Turkish tournament. They’re doing everything they can to get more games and interaction within and outside the school community. Though there are about three floorball teams IGA can play, they’re really trying their best to get the best out of it.
When Mr. Sanderlin talked about students getting more chances and opportunities at sports, I could see that he really meant it. He loved it when people could enjoy playing and getting that great experience out of floorball. It was a pity he wasn’t selfish enough to say he wanted to see everybody play floorball, but it was enough to make me think about what sports are really about. It isn’t about being popular or winning, but having fun while building that team spirit. If any sport truly recognized that and exercised that, it would be the sport supervised by Mr. Sanderlin. The fact that it's fun is the best reason to join floorball!
