The invention of cars, fast food and electricity has bestowed humanity a faster method of transportation, easy food to cook and eat, and a longer working hour. Yet these same inventions have resulted in global warming, weakening of physical attributes, fatal accidents, and obesity. Our life hasn’t gotten better in quality even though it has become easier.


A change which makes life go smoother does not necessarily make it better for everybody. One invention that has definitely made my life easier is the calculator. I can now calculate much faster and much more accurately at a faster rate. However this has proved an obstacle for me. Whenever a calculator is not allowed my concentration falters and lack confidence in my mental math. I can no longer do rudimentary math with confidence; I am overly dependant on the calculator. My dependence on the calculator has also led me to unconsciously seek the calculator even when solving an addition problem. Even though the calculator has proved to make my math homework easier it did not help me in learning math. Rather, I have grown to depend on the calculator to learn the math for me rather than me telling the calculator the math.

Such is the rule of life. Changes that can make your life easier are a double edged sword that does not always make your life better. It may even come back at you with the intent to make it worse. The advance in technology is such; bestowing faster communication, entertainment, accessible medicine, and excess of information while also attacking us with nuclear weapons, higher fatality in accidents, and health related problems which plague our whole life because of our easier life style.
