Bombing Iraq

On October 25th the deadliest bombing in two years struck Iraq raising issues on whether Iraq is yet safe. Two bombs aimed for Iraqi government buildings in Baghdad resulted in the death of 132 people and the injury of at least 500 people.


The twin bombing happened consecutively with the second bomb going off a minute later. The bombs were aimed at Baghdad’s governorate building, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Municipalities. America’s embassy was also in the area but out of the blast radius. The bombing took place during the busiest hour of the day.

The January election stands in jeopardy as the people’s trust in the government is dwindling with this new event. Rumors are saying that the terrorists had inside co-operation since they passed through the increased securities so easily. Sixty members of the police and army, along with 11 senior officers, have been detained to examine if this was the product of collusion or carelessness.

President Obama decried this event publically the very next day. He has promised America to be Iraq’s strongest ally and together will reconstruct a democratic Iraq. The EU has also condemned this act of terrorism.

Due to this horrific event the relationship between Iraq and Syria has become tense. Both countries have pulled out their ambassadors from the other country while Iraq is demanding the hand-over of former Baath party members, those who is believed to have planned the August bombings from before.
